The Landscape Sustainability Science Forum (LSSF) series was established in 2013 by the Center for Human-Environment System Sustainability at Beijing Normal University. The LSSF series serves as a high-level international academic exchange platform to promote the science and practice of landscape and land system sustainability. The forum has been held annually (except for 2020-2022 due to COVID-19), with a number of world-leading scientists as plenary speakers (http://leml.asu.edu/LSSF/index.html).  The main goal of the LSSF series is to promote the integration among ecology, geography, planning and design, environmental economics, governance and management sciences, and other related disciplines, in order to provide the scientific basis and practical guidelines for achieving regional (landscape) sustainability. LSSF’s key topics include landscape and land system sustainability, resilience, vulnerability, landscape pattern-ecosystem services-human wellbeing relationship, landscape governance, natural resource governance, landscape planning and design, land system design, and landscape/regional sustainability assessment.

The Congress of Education Ministry’s Steering Committee on Landscape Architecture is a national conference to promote and guide innovative educational and professional trainings in landscape architecture in China. It aims to timely integrate multidisciplinary innovative discoveries and cutting-edge theories related to landscape architecture, thereby promoting the development of landscape architecture disciplines and professions. Two previous conferences were held in 2019 and 2021, focusing on "Strengthening the Undergraduate Curriculum and Course Clusters in Landscape Architecture" and "New Engineering Disciplines, New Engines", respectively. These conferences have had positive and extensive impacts across the field, leading the discourse on the development of China’s landscape architecture in the new era.

Landscape sustainability science and landscape architecture are closely intertwined and mutually supportive in theory and practice, both of which can make significant contributions to ecological civilization, beautiful China, rural revitalization, and Sustainable Development Goals. Recognizing this synergy, the Landscape Sustainability Science Forum and the Congress of Education Ministry’s Steering Committee on Landscape Architecture will jointly organize this conference in 2024 together for the first time. The conference will feature plenary speakers who are leading scientists from around the world, and will host parallel sessions, including the Landscape Planning and Design Forum, the Junior Scholar Forum on Landscape Sustainability Science, and discussions on the development of the landscape architecture profession.
